One of the freshest film fests in North America spreads across the Mexican Caribbean this month, adding an extra element of international culture and art to our already vibrant streets, theaters, galleries, and beaches. Dating back to its inauguration in 2012, the Riviera Maya Film Festival in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cancun has quickly earned the respect of cinephiles and filmmakers from around the world as among the most daring festivals around. Not only is it an opportune setting for rising stars in Mexican cinema to screen and produce their work, it also offers a magnificent setting for international artists to present films that might not otherwise be seen to engaged audiences.

The world is not limited to the same spots that has been mentioned before. So in your next vacation, instead of stepping on the most popular places in Cancun (to make you feel that uniqueness), I made this article of the secret places in Cancun that most tourists don’t know about.

Isla Contoy:

Isla Contoy is an island located 30 north of Isla Mujeres. It is considered to be the most important nesting place of sea birds in all the Mexican Caribbean. The island is very protected by the biologists, no more than 200 visitors per day are allowed. Apart from the clear water visibility, white sand beaches and lots of cocoteros surrounding the island.. this paradise has more than a hundred and fifty migrating and resident bird species. To visit Isla Contoy you must depart from Isla Mujeres.

Cenote Dos Ojos:

The word “Cenote” is pronounced, say-no-tay and is derived from the Mayan word, “Dzonot” which means sacred well. Quitana Roo is full of them, especially in Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Cenote Dos Ojos has history for divers, and snorkeling lovers who are looking for something different, this hidden treasure is founded between the jungle.
Do you know? Geologists estimate that there are over 6,000 cenotes in this area, however only just over 2,000 have been discovered. These cenotes are estimated to be over 6,500 years old and are only found in this part of the world.MUSA Underwater Museum:

This is the world´s most famous sculpture underwater. Located in Isla Mujeres, 30 minutes taking a ferry from Cancun Puerto Juarez. The Riviera Maya has been mentioned for many travelers to be a destination where there is always something to do! Most people know the Riviera Maya for Cancun, located 30 min away in car, to have turquoises beaches, luxury hotels and resorts, Mayan ruins, huge water parks, jungles and plenty activities you can do in the ocean or cenotes like snorkeling or diving. Don’t forget that Riviera Maya is part of Mexico and you can experience delicious mexican food and the culture of the mayan civilization. There is so much to do.. so If you want to make sure that Riviera Maya is a good place to spend your vacation you will not regret, I made a list of 10 tours you can not miss in Riviera Maya:

1. Visit Xcaret Park:

Xcaret is a natural sanctuary for tourists that opens his door for the adventure lovers. Xcaret counts with underground rivers, mayan jungles and amazing night shows, you will be amazed by the flora and fauna that is preserved. For the mayans, this place was in its time a very important merchant port called Pole. At present, it has been converted in an eco-archaeological Park which offers their visitors a great variety of over 40 attractions and activities for everyone. Xcaret offers all the equipment for all the activities. Also, the big shops inside the park count with many souvenirs, basic personal items and pharmacy products while you walk inside the park. You will be able to connect to the Wi-fi in case you want to upload a picture to Instagram, Facebook or any social network you use (If you want to appear in Discovery Mundo Social posts you must tag #DiscoveryMundo in the description of your picture)! I recommend you to bring your towel to xcaret in case you don’t want to buy one there.

2. Walk around the temples of Chichen Itzá

You can not miss to visit on of the seven world wonders. This is the most important city for the Mayan culture located in Yucatan 2 hours away from Cancun. There are some tours at the day with all included: food, transportation, walk through the mayan city, all the structures and the historical Cenote Sagrado. The best wedding I have been in Cancun

In 2014, I attended to one of the best weddings I have been to in my life. This was at the Barcelo Mayan Palace in Riviera Maya (Transportation to Barcelo Mayan Palace). My cousin Alfonso was getting married with her girlfriend Gaby, a very beautiful couple.
They organized their wedding weekend at this hotel with a Mayan ceremony, Church ceremony and an amazing party at the end.

First, we arrived on a van this Friday with my family in Mexico and other countries. There were more than 200 people including my cousin’s girlfriend family. We arrived about 4 pm, every family was located in a room at this huge resort, it was really big you could lose yourself. Finally we stayed in a room near the wedding couple, it was cool because the photographers took pictures of them at the lobby with their wedding clothes.
We were all located in the rooms and getting ready for the first Mayan ceremony. The Mayan Civilization is part of our mexican culture and that is why they choosed to stay in the Mayan Palace.
We found ourselves at night by the sea, beautiful candles and lights everywhere, ready to start with the ceremony. The couple stood at the front seated. This ritual began with many chants that the Mayan culture do, very interesting. Fire shows and rituals called everyone’s attention; that’s how Gaby and Alfonso joined throught the Mayas.

After this ceremony, we all went to a Mexican buffet inside the hotel, the food was delicious, I can’t explain it with words. There were 4 types of Mexican Buffets. It was so good you couldn’t choose. Since eating tacos, chilaquiles, pozole, enchiladas, mole and more.. to the best desserts of all flavors, great drinks and Mexican entries..

We were like four hours at this buffet, the enviroment and the music was really nice and very mexican, of course.. After this each family went to their room. My family and me went looking for some place to go dancing, the atmosphere in each place was fun and we had to move after that big dinner!

The next day, we were ready taking breakfast in another buffet until we couldn´t eat more. We went to the beach for a while, did some activities of the hotel and stayed all day at the pool with my family and having good drinks.

My sister and I went to a spa for a good massage offered by the hotel. I can say it was one of the best massages I’ve had in my life. They were 2 girls, one for my sister and one for me. The music was very nice and the atmosphere towards the sea.
That was all day until 5pm that we had to get ready for the big day. Of course it took us like 3 hours to dress up and everything because we are women and we took over. haha
So, the wedding at the chappel started at 8. Big decorations with lots of colors and lights surrounded in each corner.

The couple looked divine together and I must say some tears came to me. It reminded me of how important it is love in life and we should cultivate it, that is why i think is the best wedding I have been in Cancun.
All this was until 10 pm ready for the big celebration party by the sea. We arrived in a monster truck for everyone and took a table for each family. A blue dance floor with lights was the fascination!

The night started with a fire show a little scary because the actors where playing and dancing with fire, it kinda look like martial arts.

Then they gave us dinner and finally the party got started. The music was very popular and super fun! Then they started playing all kind of music, rock and roll, pop, mexican, salsa, hip hop and a lot more. We danced like 8 hours… surely the best thing was the people there!

I had a lot of fun at this wedding and I’m always gonna remember it like the best wedding I have ever gone.
